Spare a thought for this poor crocodile in Indonesia, who’s been living with a tire around its neck for more than a year.

First spotted in Palu on the island of Sulawesi in 2016, the crocodile was spotted again two weeks ago on a riverbank.

The crocodile measures 4 meters (13 feet) long, while its head is 40 centimeters (16 inches) long. It’s thought to be a Siamese crocodile, listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

No one is quite sure how the tire (from a scooter) got stuck on the animal. But as it grows it runs the risk of getting strangled by the tire, so volunteers have been trying to lure the crocodile to dry land to remove it, with no luck so far.

"We have made a crocodile trap but cannot use it because we lack technical force capable of controlling wild crocodiles,” Mr Mulyadi from the Indonesia Conservation Board said.

"We have tried to lure it with chicken or meat but it never touches it."

He added: "If the tire is not removed immediately, it will strangle the crocodile in the next few months because of its growing body."

With the help of a river trap, the volunteers are now hoping to save the animal. But it’s a race against time before it’s too late.
